Zoo breaks ground on new anteater exhibit

Zoo groundbreaking
Joining in the groundbreaking (from left): Steve Capps '69; Jenny Doh '91, UCI Alumni Association president; Chancellor Michael V. Drake; Assemblyman Jose Solorio '92; Charles Dobson '70, M.S. '79, UCIAA Santa Ana Alumni Chapter president; and Jorge E. Ancona, UCIAA executive director.

The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park broke ground Dec. 19 on its Tierra de las Pampas habitat, the future stomping ground of two giant anteaters – wild cousins to UCI's furry mascot, Peter the Anteater. UCI alumni, students and community friends helped raise more than $1 million to bring the anteaters to Orange County. The habitat is expected to be completed in January 2010. The zoo is looking for a pair of giant anteaters from South America and has established a conservation fund for their acquisition and ongoing support. To learn more, contact the Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo.
