A memorial for Coach Mulligan

Bill Mulligan coaches UCI basketball players
Former coach Bill Mulligan brought national acclaim to the UCI men's basketball program in the 1980s.

Family, friends and former colleagues and players gathered at the Bren Events Center Feb. 7 to remember former UCI men's basketball coach Bill Mulligan, who passed away Jan. 12.

A familiar figure on the sidelines with his trademark sweaters and saddle shoes, Mulligan served as head coach for 11 seasons (1980-91), compiling 163 victories in that time.

He led UCI to National Invitation Tournament wins over San Diego State in 1982 and UCLA in 1986. His Anteater teams defeated perennial powerhouse UNLV six times in the 1980s, and UCI was the first conference opponent to defeat the Rebels at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center.

Eight of Mulligan's former players were drafted into the National Basketball Association.

Mulligan is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons Billy Jr., Shawn and Brian; and sister Kay Huguelet.

Golfer goes from Anteaters to Asian golf tour

Sean Shahi
While attending UCI, Sean Shahi finished in the top 10 at the Big West Championship three seasons.

In January, former UCI golfer Sean Shahi earned his 2010 Asian Tour card in the qualifying tournament at Palm Hills and Springfield Village in Hua Hin, Thailand.

Shahi finished 11th with a 72-hole total of 279 (70-70-67-72). The top 40 players and ties earned their exempt cards for 2010.

"Everyone involved with our program is proud of what Sean accomplished by earning his Asian Tour card," said UCI head coach Paul Smolinski. "The fact that he was able to travel to the other side of the world and post eight consecutive solid rounds to finish ahead of many talented and experienced players says a lot and bodes well for his future as a pro golfer."

As an Anteater, Shahi received All-Big West Conference accolades in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
