Russell Turner was named head coach of UCI men's basketball April 9.
He has served the past six seasons as an assistant coach for the NBA's Golden State Warriors, where he focused on game planning, analyzing opponent tendencies and working with players on developing individual skills.
As assistant basketball coach at Stanford University from 2000 to 2004, Turner helped the Cardinal achieve a combined overall record of 105-24 and advance to three straight NCAA tournaments.
Veteran UCI track & field/cross country head coach Vince O'Boyle was inducted April 14 into the Mt. San Antonio College Relays Hall of Fame.
He has been named Big West Conference Coach of the Year 20 times in his career. Now in his 28th year at UCI, O'Boyle has coached the Anteaters to 12 Big West titles in women's cross country and seven in men's cross country. While at UCI, he also has guided 22 All-Americans in track & field and cross country and 18 individual Big West champions in cross country.
O'Boyle has been involved in the Mt. SAC Relays for 47 years, first as a runner for Monrovia High School in 1963 — and later for Citrus College and Cal Poly Pomona — and then as a coach at Citrus College and UCI.
He was inducted at the 52nd annual Mt. SAC Relays banquet at the Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry, along with two-time Olympic medalist John Godina (shot put) and Toby Stevenson, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the pole vault.
Men's golf is eyeing another Big West Conference title this spring.
The team will compete in the conference tournament at the Mission Viejo Country Club Monday and Tuesday, May 3-4. The Anteaters have won five Big West titles since 2001, including back-to-back championships in 2007 and 2008, and has finished in the league's top three for eight of the last nine years.
Women's golf, which has won five Big West titles since the program's 2002 inception, placed third in the conference championship April 18-20 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. The team has finished at least second for the past six years, winning four straight Big West championships from 2005 to 2008.
Men's and women's track & field will host the Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2.
Scott, who graduated in 1978, was a six-time All-American in track and cross country at UCI and a three-time Olympian. He's currently head coach at Cal State San Marcos.
The event draws close to 1,000 competitors each year.
