Nine earn first pharmaceutical sciences degrees

Nine students have received the first bachelor's degrees conferred by UCI's Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Founded as a program in 2003, the department offers an interdisciplinary curriculum of biology, chemistry and pharmacology for students interested in careers in the booming drug development and biotechnology industries or in pharmaceutical research. The "pharm sci nine" walked in the College of Health Sciences' commencement ceremony in June. The growing department has 53 returning students, with another 69 scheduled to join next year.

Parking & Transportation's ZotWheels wins innovation award

Parking & Transportation Services has garnered a 2010 Campus Technology Innovator award in the student systems and services category for its automated bike-sharing program. ZotWheels allows students, faculty and staff to share bicycles stationed in special racks around the university. Editors of Campus Technology magazine and the judging committee selected ZotWheels as one of 11 projects to be honored out of almost 500 entries. Awards will be bestowed at a conference this month, and the magazine's August issue will feature the winners.

Students, alumni receive top scholarships

UCI undergraduates and alumni have won 15 of the nation's most competitive academic awards this year and will use their scholarships for critical research on social and educational issues around the world. The awards include four Fulbright Fellowships, six National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships and two of only six Goldwater Scholarships bestowed in the entire University of California system.
