UCI basketball ready for prime time

Prime Ticket cameras will visit the Bren Events Center this season for two men's basketball games.

The sports network will televise the homecoming game against UC Riverside at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, and the Cal State Northridge game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.

UCI's home game against the University of the Pacific is one of four Big West wild-card games Saturday, Feb. 4, with ESPNU and Fox Sports West selecting two of the contests to televise.

Head Coach Russell Turner's Anteaters were 2-0 at home last season with the Big West television package, defeating UC Santa Barbara and Pacific on Fox Sports West.

ESPN3 will cover UCI women's basketball at the Bren when the Anteaters, led by head coach Molly Goodenbour, face UC Riverside at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.

Golf alumnus Mike Lavery qualifies for Nationwide Tour

Former UCI golfer Mike Lavery '03 earned his 2012 Nationwide Tour card after shooting a 4-under 68 in the last round of the PGA Tour qualifying school's final stage Dec. 5.

He finished 54th overall with a six-round total of 428. Lavery played at UCI from 1999 to 2003, capturing the Big West individual title his senior year. He was a three-time All-Big West honoree.

Two other alums, John Chin and Sean Shahi, received conditional status on the Nationwide Tour. Chin placed 82nd and Shahi 159th. The top 25 players at the q-school final stage earn PGA Tour cards, while the next 50 players merit Nationwide Tour cards and remaining finishers receive conditional status.

Anteaters, Waves to meet at Dodger Stadium

UCI baseball will face Pepperdine in a non-conference game at Dodger Stadium at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13.

The Anteaters host the annual alumni game Saturday, Feb. 4, then start the 2012 campaign in Houston at the RBI tournament Friday through Sunday, Feb. 17-19. Games will be played at Minute Maid Park and the RBI facility.

UCI opens the home slate against UNLV on Monday, Feb. 20, and hosts the Washington Huskies in its first home weekend series Friday through Sunday, Feb. 24-26. The Anteaters return to Waco, Texas, Friday through Sunday, March 2-4, to play Baylor and Lamar twice each.

Led by head coach Mike Gillespie, UCI finished 43-18 overall last season and advanced to the NCAA super regional for the second time in four years.

Men's volleyball ranks second in coaches' poll

The Anteaters finished second in the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll.

UCI scored 112 points and four first-place votes, while BYU earned the top spot with 115 points and six first-place votes.

Led by head coach John Speraw, the Anteaters were the 2007 and 2009 national champions. Last year, they were 19-12 overall and ranked fourth in the nation.

UCI hosts UC San Diego at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21; Pepperdine at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25; and USC at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in the Bren Events Center. All-American Carson Clark as well as seniors Austin D' Amore, Dan McDonnell and Kevin Carroll will return to play for the team.
