Alumnus coaches NBA West All-Star team to victory

Scott Brooks '87, head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder and a former UCI basketball standout, guided the West squad to a 152-149 victory over the East at the 2012 National Basketball Association All-Star Game in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 26.

He earned the West's head-coaching honor when the Thunder clinched the best record in the conference through Feb. 15. He was named the 2010 NBA coach of the year after leading Oklahoma City to an NBA-best 27-win improvement from the previous season.

Brooks played for UCI from 1985 to 1987, averaging 23.8 points as a senior. He played 11 seasons in the NBA, including 1994 with the NBA-champion Houston Rockets. He still holds the UCI record for career free-throw percentage at .859.

Salute to scholar-athletes banquet May 30

UCI Athletics honors students who have excelled in the classroom and in competition at its annual Salute to Scholar-Athletes banquet Wednesday, May 30, at the Bren Events Center.

The banquet, a fundraiser for scholar-athlete scholarships, begins with a reception for scholar-athletes and head coaches at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

Awards include the Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year, to be presented to baseball infielder D.J. Crumlich and women's soccer player Lexi Kopf; UCI Scholar-Athletes of the Year; and academic achievement, academic excellence, leadership, and outstanding performance.

Golf teams tee up at spring invitationals

Women's golf hosts the Anteater Invitational at Dove Canyon Country Club March 26-27.

Men's and women's golf teams host invitationals at area courses this spring.

Coach Julie Brooks' women's squad compete in the Anteater Invitational at Dove Canyon Country Club Monday and Tuesday, March 26-27. UCI finished third in the event last year.

Coach Paul Smolinski's men's team host the 32nd Anteater Invitational at Shady Canyon Golf Club in Irvine Monday and Tuesday, April 23-24. UCI placed second at last year's invitational.

The women compete in the Big West Conference Championship at the San Luis Obispo Country Club Sunday through Tuesday, April 22-24, and the men's team play in the conference tournament at the La Quinta Resort's Mountain Course Sunday through Tuesday, April 29-May 1.

Track & Field hosts two meets in April

The men's and women's track & field teams host two meets in April at Anteater Stadium.

The Anteater squads face Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara in the annual Big West Challenge Cup Friday, April 13.

UCI hosts the 18th annual Steve Scott Invitational Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29.

Scott, a six-time All-American in track & cross country at UCI and three-time Olympian, is currently head coach at Cal State San Marcos. The former American record-holder in the mile has run 136 sub-four minute miles in his career. He's a member of the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame and UCI Athletics Hall of Fame.
