UCI pride was on full display April 21 when the campus welcomed thousands of visitors to its annual open house. The 34th Celebrate UCI event featured the return of longtime favorites — including a kiddie carnival, the Car Show on the Green and the Wayzgoose festival — as well as new Earth-friendly activities.
Chancellor Michael Drake and three faculty members recently concluded an academic mission in Israel, forging collaborative research agreements and student and faculty exchanges with the country's top universities. Among the highlights of the trip was a visit with Israel President Shimon Peres. "Our meetings with university leaders and President Peres were enlightening and productive," Drake said. "Together, we were able to identify many similarities between UC Irvine and the top universities in Israel." Accompanying him were Kenneth Janda, physical sciences dean; Gregory Washington, engineering dean; Dr. Zeev Kain, associate dean for clinical operations and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care in UCI's School of Medicine; and Larry Gold, international programs assistant to the provost.
UCI's expertise in alumni programs and written and visual communications earned recognition in seven categories of the 2012 Awards of Excellence contest sponsored by the Council for Advancement & Support of Education District VII. The district includes Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, the Northern Mariana Islands and Utah. UCI's awards were: Regular Alumni Relations Programs (gold); Collaborative Alumni Relations Programs (silver); New Alumni Relations Program Initiatives (bronze); Issues Management (silver); Excellence in General News Writing (gold); Individual Photography (silver); and Photographer of the Year (silver and two bronze awards).
